Awareness, Freedom and Discipline!

Why No Home Schooling!

About Home Schooling:

As human beings, we are constantly learning and evolving. One could argue that we learn much of what we know from life outside school, from our general experiences, and in many cases from our own studies.
Learning can certainly be done anywhere by anyone. School didnt teach us everything and it is by no means the only way we get our life education; it may make you learn certain things by memory and by doing various activities in the classroom, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. When a person says "I am wiser than I was yesterday" then he is aware that he is in a constant process of learning that continues for a lifetime even outside the school walls.

With that in mind, why have school at all? Why not simply educate children at home? There are several reasons why,
in gift economy, a school education is still generally regarded as necessary:
Our lives have lots of variety simply because humans are the most thinking and  experimental species on earth. It is our nature to evolve and to develop through our ever growing knowledge. Therefore there are many aspects to learning, and most things that we want to study contain vast amounts of material. Covering everything effectively tthrough home study would be a difficult thing to accomplish for the average parent. One would need:

1. Time
2. Tools
3. Specific structure
4. An effective method of teaching
5. Self discipline (home schooling takes a lot of commitment and
organization from the parents).
6. General teaching skills

All these base requirements are not fully possible at home in the majority of cases. This is why school comes into the picture. In addition, not all parents are interested in educating their children and few would be capable of the teaching skills required.

Another problem is that, unless great care is taken, home schooling could become an anti social past time for the child. It doesn't allow the natural process of interacting with other children and with teachers to take place.
Since Gift Economy more than any other society centers on a sharing life and on a general feeling of oneness where  interacting with other people is necessary at least some of the time, that kind of anti-social situation is less than ideal. Furthermore, the child will miss out on playing games, running around, and  getting natural exercise outside in the fresh air with other children during break times.

Children are generally better off being placed in a learning environment with teachers who really love to teach. While it is true that we can learn anywhere,  school is still the most practical place for learning. Children need that focus of a classroom environment and a structured syllabus.

Another advantage to school is that you get specialist teachers: the geography teacher, the sociology teacher, the maths teacher, and so on. Each of these teachers has a particular skill in the field that they are teaching.  Few parents have the ability to specialize in all of the required subjects to the same degree. They will be good at a few things and weak in some other areas. Many parents work (or if they are staying at home, they have housework and other commitments that don't allow them enough time to educate their children). Teaching will take up their work time and their leisure time. It will stop them from having their own life and following their own passions. A woman, for example, may find herself passionate about garment-making. She may have strong ambitions in that line of work. But if she has to spend many hours a day educating her children, then her ambitions will be squashed.

School takes away all those responsibilities from parents and allows them to live their own full life during the hours that their children are at school.

Schools have the advantage of special areas for specific study. They have science laboratories, domestic science/home economics laboratories for cookery and household lessons, workshops for metalwork, etc. Few homes would have such places to study.
Furthermore, the school provides all the materials required for such studies: the chemicals, the paints, the tools, and so on. Many of these materials would be fairly difficult for the majority of parents to get hold of.

In Gift Economy, the parent has no say in what line of work their child chooses to go for, or what subjects he wishes to study. That is yet another reason why we favour a school education rather than a home education. Parents mean well, but they can make serious mistakes when it comes to making decisions
for their own children. For example, they may decide that they want their child to be a doctor or a dentist, or whatever. But the child may have very different ideas. The child may dream of being a farmer or a journalist or even a rocket scientist. In our society, we allow
children to follow their own dreams rather than their parents' dreams.

When all is said and done, schools are necessary, except in very exceptional circumstances..
